Describing the key qualities of Scotland's wild landscapes
Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) commissioned Caroline Stanton Landscape Architect and Nigel Buchan in 2013 to provide written and illustrated descriptions, initially for Search Areas for Wild Land (SAWLs) and subsequently for the 43 Core Areas of Wild Land in Scotland (CAWLs).
Using the published wild land mapping, aerial photography and other
resources, the project involved extensive fieldwork to identify the physical attributes and perceptual qualities that each wild land area exhibits. The method used follows the principles set out in the SNH Policy Statement 02/03: Wildness in Scotland's Countryside.
The descriptions are designed to help manage development and land use change in these valued areas.
